In 1871, Manhattan, Moth, born of a Gypsy fortune teller and ne'er do well who abandoned them, must leave home at the age of twelve to live as a servant in the house of Mrs. Wentworth, a lady of station and inventive cruelty. Moth escapes to a nearby brothel where gentlemen will pay dearly for the "virgin cure", the belief that deflowering a girl can cure the incurable and tainted. There she meets Dr. Sadie, a woman doctor who works with prostetutes and the poor.
